Why HA’IALONO? Why now?

Well, simply put, when we consciously welcome in the change of season, we are more ready to actually receive it. Too often do we move through life in revolt to the change that comes. Ha’ialono remedies the normalcy. Beyond the inner landscapes of humanity, we are also moving out of our yearly dry season, and it is a kuana’ike Hawai’i, a hawaiian perspective that it is our responsibility during this time, to call in the elements to help restore balance to our natural resources and environments. Because of the quantum leap, hulihia, we currently find ourselves in on earth, the prayer of HA’IALONO is to empower the kanaka with chants + mana to aid in the restoration of natural order on our planet. This is a ho’omana of the human to an enlivening and empowered way of being with the natural world. We will offer tools to confidently navigate the changes of season, from the micro to the macro. From the internal to the external. This offering is meant to both nourish the inner landscape and enrich the external, so we, as kanaka, can move in our rightful and responsible way in this world.

Kaleinohea Cleghorn

Lankaila

Kaleinohea Cleghorn is a ceremonialist who was raised in the traditions of hula and chant.  Born into the bosom of Konahuanui, raised on the sands of Keoneawa, fortified by the guidance and teachings of her many kumu. She holds a BA in 'Olelo Hawai'i, 30 years of formal training in hula, and over a decade of active ceremony on Mauna Kea.  Kaleinohea is inspired to offer the chant and dance of Hawai'i as a vehicle for humans to connect to the sacred, within themselves, within relationships and with the environment. She is here to nurture right relations with Hawai'i and honua(earth) at large.

Lankaila grew up in the forests of ʻĀhualoa and down in Waipi‘o Valley. He was raised by and able to learn from a wide range of Hawaiian practitioners.

After graduating from Kanu O Ka ʻĀina NCPCS in 2004, he went on to teach in the DOE system, and continues to do so nearly two decades later. Upon founding The Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hāmākua (2016), newly renamed, HŌ'Ā (Ignite), he has expanded his reach of cultural education locally, nationally, and internationally. A lifelong student of Hula and ritual, Lanakila received the title of Kumu Hula through the ceremonial right of uniki under Kekuhi Kanahele and Taupouri Tangaro.

Lanakila is best known for his activism and leadership in the movement to protect Maunakea and has served on the official Hawaiʻi State appointed Maunakea Working Group charged with the creation of a new management body for wahi kapu. He has since also been appointed by the Governor of Hawai'i to serve on the newly formed Maunakea Authority Board as an expert in Hawaiian Cultural Practices. Dedicated to activism but also solution creation, Lanakila was proud to co-author the revolutionary economic reform document: ʻĀina Aloha Economic Futures.

Lanakila lets the aina lead in all of his activism, politics and community participation. His full name is somewhat of a prophecy, Lankailaokaainaikapono, championing the justice and life of the natural world.

Straight up incredible and empowering. This past month has uncovered parts of my story that I had ignored or been unaware of for so long - especially my own shame around my voice. The "play-ssignments" have been so healing - listening to nature, communing with her, trying to match her music. Feeling the vibrations in my throat, chest, and gut ground me like nothing else…

— K.v.

Mahalo for being the vessel we need and allowing Spirit to guide you in
shaking us out of our deep slumber.

This lāhui is how we change it all. By far this is one of the BEST
classes I have been apart of because of the soulful purpose.

The divine union of your magic with Lanakila is fire! Learning with you both was like learning with ohana - except not boring;) Everything we needed you gave and more. Most importantly you gave us
heart and lots of giggles.

I've noticed a huge difference in my leo when I oli at hula - the other night I thought to myself "woah did you go there?" and then I said to myself "Yes, I did!"  That is the best part of this, I may not have all the chants down, but I am feeling more comfortable with...  my voice, my connection, my story, my ME!! Ok, now I'M crying! forever grateful and forever ME.

— H.R.

The potency that comes from your soul is so palpable. I am so grateful
to be gifted the magic that is within the many ancestors of your heart.
